National Taxpayers Union Foundation (NTUF)

The National Taxpayers Union Foundation (NTUF) is a research and educational organization dedicated to helping citizens of all generations understand how tax policies, spending programs, and regulations affect them now and in the future.

NTUF is looking for interns to participate in our associate analyst program.  Associates provide research assistance for the Foundation’s legislative spending study, BillTally.  BillTally is informative as well as influential.  Both sides of the political aisle reply upon this hard-hitting research.

Associates will also assist with other research projects and educational efforts. Time permitting Associates may pursue suitable research and writing topics that will lead to publishable policy papers, issue briefs, or op-eds.

Skills We are Looking for:

*  Basic Quantitative Skills — NTUF analysts help generate real policy products. These studies track and report Congressional spending patterns. Interns should know basic spreadsheet operations. Attention to detail is also important.

*  An Interest in Public Policy Issues — Associates will gain exposure to the variety of policy issues before Congress as well as expand their knowledge of the legislative process.

*  Research Skills–Being able to use published sources as well as the Internet is extremely beneficial.

*  Effective Writing — Whether drafting correspondence to a Capitol Hill office or proofreading a media release, Associates must be able to express complex ideas concisely.

*  General Communications Skills — in the course of your work, you will interface with numerous legislative and executive branch offices.

Internship opportunity in the OAG’s NOVA Regional Office

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is the Commonwealth’s law firm. Its clients are the Virginia state government and the state agencies, boards and commissions that compose that government.

The OAG’s Northern Virginia Regional Office is seeking an unpaid intern for approximately 15 hours a week to assist the Community Outreach & TRIAD Director. Duties include preparing for and/or attending community and TRIAD events; update TRIAD information for the agency’s website and local TRIADs; assist with constituent correspondence and telephone calls, and other research, as needed.

TRIAD is a partnership consisting of the local Sheriff and/or Police Chief, senior citizens, and senior service providers, who work together in their communities to reduce criminal victimization of the elderly.

Congressman Randy Forbes’ office

Congressman J. Randy Forbes (R-VA) has three full-time, unpaid internships available for the 2010 fall session in his Washington, DC office. Duties include answering telephones and greeting visitors, collecting constituent information, researching legislation and policy issues, drafting policy updates, attending briefings and hearings, and assisting communications, administrative and legislative staff.

Must be highly motivated, self-starter, detail oriented, and possess excellent organizational and communication skills, a strong work ethic, a positive attitude and have the ability to manage multiple tasks on a deadline. This is a great opportunity for college students and graduates seeking Capitol Hill experience. Virginia ties preferred, but not necessary.

Registrar’s Office (Fairfax)

The City of Fairfax Office of the Electoral Board and General Registrar services approximately 15,000 registered voters. The office has a regular staff of two and a half employees and usually has one intern for the period leading up to every November Election.

Everyone that works in the General Registrar’s Office has a superior knowledge of the electoral process. An Intern will be exposed to most of the aspects of managing an election.

NOTE: THIS IS AN UNPAID POSITION.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:
• Assist with processing Voter Registration Applications.
• Assist with processing mail and in-person Absentee Ballot Applications.
• File processed Absentee & Voter Registration Applications.
• Assist with testing and verifying proprietary election systems.
• Assist with voting security issues.
• Proof reading technical instructions used in training Officers of Election.
• Assist in training Officers of Election.

TERM:
Mid September to November 2, 2010

HOURS:
Flexible, but consistent. 10-20 hours per week. Normal hours of operation are from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. The candidate will be required to work some weekends. Specific weekend shifts include: Saturday, October 23rd and 30th 2010 and Sunday, October 31, 2010.

REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be a registered voter in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Must have at least one favorable recommendation from a faculty member or former employer.
• Must be able to deal with the public favorably.
• Must be able to handle detailed work.
• Must be able to work unsupervised.
• Be able to learn proprietary software systems of similar complexity to MS Excel or Access.
• Must be reliable and exhibit a good work ethic.

Congressman Rob Wittman’s Capitol Hill office

Internships run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters for college students. Although all internships in all offices are unpaid, students gain invaluable work experience. The hours are flexible to accommodate students’ hectic course schedules, but generally run 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when Congress is in session, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when not in session.

In Washington, interns’ responsibilities will vary. They will be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office. Contact info here.

National Republican Senatorial Committee

Interns needed to help monitor news coverage of the 2010 Senate races. Interns will work in a fast paced environment dictated by the 24 hours news cycle. Interns will be searching & formatting news coverage from print, television, and blogs to be sent to staff, consultants, and activists. Interns needed to cover 6:30am-10:00am, 10:30am-2:30pm, 3:00pm-7:00pm shifts. Applicant should note which shifts s/he is interested in working, must be available for a minimum of 4 shifts.

Republican Women’s Group

Want to help change the Republican party for the better?  We do.  We are a new group of MODERATE Republican Women who have come together to encourage the party to find and support moderate candidates.  Our group needs an (unpaid) intern for the rest of this year to help with everything from managing mailing lists, to scheduling speakers, to candidate research, to anything else it might take to get us up and running on a national scale.  We are gearing up for a major media event in the fall so we need help with that also.  We need someone who is a good writer, someone who is very comfortable with old and new media, and someone who has a real interest in the future of the Republican party.  For the short term, we can probably get by with 10 hours a week or so, but that could increase as we grow.  At least initially you will be working in a law firm office downtown.  For more info, email Kay Bailey at kbailey@baileylawgroup.com
