Can Jobs and Wealth be Created?

February 28, 2009

President Obama is promising to “save or create 3 million to 4 million jobs over the next two years.”

There is a difference between creation and production. To me creating is something in the mind. Someone creates a story thus if they create a job it is not really meaningful. Yes, they may be doing things but they are not contributing something useful to society and their pay must come from another source since their created job is not producing anything. However, when a job is produced it is the product of work and innovation and this creates something meaningful for society. Say someone created a way for a telephone to be mobile, say a cell phone. Well, they need to hire people to make the cell phones and build the towers. People are willing to pay for the product this the money is coming from the product and thus not a burden on society.

I would also like to point out President Obama’s added word to his promise. The word “save.” This single word will save his administration much grief. There is no real way to count the number of jobs saved. These are what if questions that we cannot answer.
